what do the police do with pets who are left in a seized home?

#1FerretMom asked:

If the caregivers of two ferrets were arrested and the police went into the residence, what do they do with the pets? Oh, and the owners can’t return to the residence. Will the owner be given them back? Will the cops just leave them there to starve to death?
